Abstract

Quiller shows students how to progressively develop compositions from different subjects and how various shapes and values of a subject can trigger ideas for the painting. Starting with a quick compositional sketch, the artist then develops a value study for a finished landscape painting. The importance of interpreting the subject is emphasized as the artist arranges a still life and then demonstrates selecting shapes from the subject to be included in the composition. Masterworks reinforce the concepts presented in the program.
