Abstract
Traditionally-schooled Chinese migrant Chua Ek Kay challenged conventional forms and subject matter in Chinese ink painting - a fraught endeavour in an urbanising, globalising, Singapore, herself struggling with cultural identity in a fast-changing world. Being and becoming Chua Ek Kay is the intimate story of a man who lived through, and for, his art, forging his identity against a changing cultural backdrop from the 1980s until 2008 when tragedy struck him. Chua Ek Kay's passion, despair, triumphs and humble genius are shared here for the first time by family, close friends and artistic collaborators. This film explores his legacy and celebrates one man's artistic journey to define and ultimately be true to himself.
