Wajda's second film depicts the last days of the Warsaw Uprising, when battered Polish Resistance fighters were forced to retreat into the city's sewers, a hell from which there seemed no escape. This central film of Wajda's Resistance trilogy (between A Generation and Ashes and diamonds) helped awaken international attention to the new Polish cinema.
